The trading journal

What to record after each trade, and how after fifty trades you can see exactly what works and what merely feels good.

The whole course

Disclosure, not advice

The strategies, scores and signals here are produced by an algorithmic system and based on technical data only. They are not investment advice or a substitute for professional advice, we are not investment advisors. Trading involves risk, and every decision and action is solely the user's responsibility.

FoundationsLesson 7 of 343 min

The trading journal

Without a journal there is no improvement — only memory, and memory is biased in your favour. It keeps the breakout that ran 20% and quietly drops the seven that failed before it.

What to record

For each trade: date and ticker, setup name, the reason for entry in one sentence, entry and stop price, size, the result in risk units, and an honest answer to one question — did I follow the plan or deviate? A screenshot of the chart before entry is worth more than any written description.

What to do with it

After fifty trades, group by setup name and compute expectancy for each separately. Almost always one setup carries all the profit, one is break-even and one loses consistently — and you kept trading it because it's exciting. The fastest improvement in a trader's career is usually deleting the losing setup, not adding a new one.

A second cut: separate trades executed to plan from trades that deviated. If the first group is profitable and the second isn't, your problem is discipline, not analysis — and the fix is entirely different.
